How to calculate the size of the canvas for cross-stitch?

Problems with calculating the size of fabric for cross-stitching and the correctness of the translation of the size of the embroidery pattern from stitches to centimeters usually arise for beginning needlewomen. It is not so difficult to make a mistake when calculating dimensions, and it is very difficult to immediately determine this error. As a result of the mistake, the embroidered work will have to be redone from scratch.

What are the sizes of fabric for cross stitching

Fabric for embroidery or canvas - fabrics that are specifically designed for embroidery. A special feature of such tissues is their numbering. The numbering of the canvas shows the number of crosses placed in one inch of the canvas. Among the manufacturers adopted the following numbering of fabrics: №11, №14, №16, etc. For a more comfortable work with embroidery fabric, the number of crosses was recalculated for ten centimeters:

- Aida 11 - in ten centimeters 43 cr.;
- Aida 14 - in ten centimeters 55 cr.;
- Aida 16 - in ten centimeters 63 cr.;
- Aida 18 - in ten centimeters 71 cr.;
- Aida 22 - in ten centimeters 87 cr. и т.д.

How to calculate the canvas by the number of crosses

You can calculate dimensions in several ways using a standard calculator:
Method 1. We will show the calculation using the example of the Aida 14 canvas. For example, take a 180 by 100 scheme.
180 : 55 * 10 + 10=32,7 cm + 10 cm = 42,7 cm
100 : 55 * 10 + 10= 18,2 cm + 10 cm = 28,2 cm – where 55 is the number of cells in ten centimeters of the Aida 14 canvas, 10 is the stock for easy embroidery and stretching of the embroidered work on the frame.
Method 2. The calculation is also based on the example of Aida 14 and the size of the scheme is 180 per 100 crosses:
180 : 14 * 2,54 + 10 = 32,7 cm + 10 см = 42,7 cm
100 : 14 * 2,54 + 10= 18,2 cm + 10 см= 28,2 cm – where 14 is the number of the canvas, 2.54 is the number of centimeters per inch, 10 is the overlap for a more convenient embroidery process and design work.
As a result of the calculations, we obtain the required dimensions of the cut of the fabric 42.7 cm by 28.2 cm. The obtained dimensions should be rounded up to a larger side 43 * 29 cm.
Method 3. Calculation of uniformity (uniform fabric).
First you need to determine the number of the fabric - for the calculation we take the fabric number 25. Then it will be determined with the number of threads (after how many threads one cross will be sewn). For the calculation we will take the cross through 1 thread and a pattern of 100 by 180 crosses.
We obtain the following calculations:
100 : 25 * 2,54 * 1 + 10 cm = 20,2 round up to 20.5 cm;
180 : 25 * 2,54 * 1 + 10 cm = 28,3 round up to 28.5 cm, where 25 is the number of the canvas (fabric) for embroidery, 2.54 - 2.54 cm in 1 inch (conversion of units from inches to centimeters), 1 - through how many strands of fabric one cross will be embroidered, 10 - overlap on the edges of embroidery. As a result of the calculations, it turned out - for a 100-by-180 cross scheme, a 21 * 29 cm cut is needed

How to use the calculator to calculate the canvas

Using online "calculator for canvas Aida" you can make all the necessary calculations in a few seconds and get the necessary dimensions of the cut of fabric needed for embroidery. The advantage of these calculators is also a library with a large number of canvas parameters from the most famous manufacturers of manufacturers. Finding a calculator on the Internet, you will need to enter the size of embroidery in stitches (height, width), the number of allowances and specify the number of the canvas. After clicking the "Calculate" button you get the result without using mathematical formulas.

How to mark the canvas for embroidery

We will give some important tips for those who start embroidery and for those who do not know that the fabric before embroidering needs to be laid out (drawn). With a marked canvas, the embroidery process will take much less time.
Tip 1. The outline of the canvas, as a rule, you should start from the center - this method of marking is better to use when embroidering sets in which there is no information about the size of indents. For the correct determination of the center, it is necessary to fold the piece of fabric in half vertically, and then horizontally. On the symbolic scheme you need to find the center of the scheme, and after that mark the outline with squares of ten to ten cells.
Tip 2. Some manufacturers of kits for needlework use markup from the upper left corner. Also, when you embroider according to the scheme you bought yourself, you need to calculate the size of the margin from the edge in order to finish the embroidery to get to the corner from which the marking started.
Tip 3. The markup can be done in the following ways:
- special pencils or markers. There are markers for sale - washable and fading. Using a flush marker - you get thin marking lines, this type of marker holds well and is washed away under the influence of cold water. ATTENTION!!! - markers should not be washed off with hot water, the marking will be fixed and will not be washed out any more (any temperature treatment of the marker is prohibited);
- threads - thin shiny or water-soluble threads. The first easily removed from the embroidery floss, the second dissolve when washing embroidery.
