What are the sizes of fabric for cross stitching?
Embroidery fabric or canvas are fabrics that are specially designed for embroidery. A special feature of such fabrics is their numbering. The canvas numbering indicates the number of crosses placed in one inch of the canvas. Among manufacturers, the following numbering of fabrics is accepted: No. 11, No. 14, No. 16, etc. For more convenient work with the embroidery fabric, the number of crosses has been recalculated to ten centimeters:
- Aida 11 - in ten centimeters 43 cr.;
- Aida 14 - in ten centimeters 55 cr.;
- Aida 16 - in ten centimeters 63 cr.;
- Aida 18 - in ten centimeters 71 cr.;
- Aida 22 - in ten centimeters 87 cr. etc.
How to count the canvas by the number of crosses
You can calculate the dimensions in several ways using a regular calculator:
Method 1. We will show the calculation using the example of canvas Aida 14. For example, let's take a diagram with dimensions of 180 x 100 crosses.
180: 55 * 10 + 10 = 32.7 cm + 10 cm = 42.7 cm
100: 55 * 10 + 10 = 18.2 cm + 10 cm = 28.2 cm - where 55 is the number of cells in ten centimeters of the Aida canvas 14, 10 is a margin for easy embroidery and stretching of the embroidered work on the frame.
Method 2. Calculation also on the example of Aida 14 and the size of the scheme 180 by 100 crosses:
180: 14 * 2.54 + 10 = 32.7 cm + 10 cm = 42.7 cm
100: 14 * 2.54 + 10 = 18.2 cm + 10 cm = 28.2 cm - where 14 is the canvas number, 2.54 is the number of centimeters in one inch, 10 is an overlap for a more convenient embroidery process and work design ...
As a result of calculations, we obtain the required dimensions of the cut of the fabric 42.7 cm by 28.2 cm.The obtained dimensions must be rounded up to the larger side of 43 * 29 cm.
Method 3. Calculation of uniformity (uniform fabric).
First you need to determine the fabric number - for the calculation we will take fabric No. 25. Then it will be determined with the number of threads (after how many threads one cross will be embroidered). For the calculation, we will take a cross through 1 thread and a pattern of 100 by 180 crosses.
We get the following calculations:
100: 25 * 2.54 * 1 + 10 cm = 20.2 round up to 20.5 cm;
180: 25 * 2.54 * 1 + 10 cm = 28.3 round up to 28.5 cm, where 25 is the canvas (fabric) No. for embroidery, 2.54 - 2.54 cm in 1 inch (conversion of units from inches to centimeters), 1 - through how many threads of fabric 1 cross will be embroidered, 10 - overlap along the edges of the embroidery.
As a result of the calculations, it turned out - for a scheme of 100 by 180 crosses, a cut of 21 * 29 cm is needed.

Tip 3. The markup can be done in the following ways:
- special pencils or markers. There are markers on the market - washable and disappearing. Using a washable marker - you will get thin lines, this type of marker sticks well and washes away with cold water. ATTENTION!!! - the markers cannot be washed off with hot water, the markings will be fixed and will no longer be washed off (any heat treatment of the marker is prohibited);
- threads - thin shiny or water-soluble threads. The former are easily removed from under the embroidery floss, the latter dissolve when the embroidery is washed.
